A new prioritization view for product initiatives
Clear and consistent prioritization. It is what product managers strive for. But is it possible? It is when you have a well-defined framework to help you make important decisions at key points in the strategic planning process. This is why we are extending our popular prioritization view to support initiatives.
Use the new prioritization view for initiatives to review major team efforts and prioritize the highest-value work.
Aha! Roadmaps already includes prioritization pages for ideas, epics, and features. Customers love how easy it is to select a group of work items, update the product value score for each one, and rank them in priority order. Today's update extends this functionality to initiatives — helping you establish a clear set of strategic priorities that everyone can agree on.
Find the new prioritization page in the Change view type dropdown for initiatives. By default, you will see any initiatives in your workspace that are associated with an active time frame. If you want to prioritize initiatives across multiple products, adjust the filters to include other workspaces and then narrow your list using criteria like status and created date. From here, move initiatives into the main view in bulk or individually.
Now you are ready to make prioritization decisions. As part of this update, we also made it possible to assess the strategic value of initiatives using the same product value scorecard that you use for ideas, epics, and features. Adjust your scores inline based on population, need, strategy, effort, and confidence. Or customize the scorecard and methodology in settings to match your team's workflow and business needs. Then rank your initiatives in priority order, adding priority limit lines to drive focus.
Let's look at two ways you can use the new prioritization view for initiatives:
Rank your product initiatives
Imagine you are planning your roadmap for the first half of 2024. You have already established your product goals — so the next step is to align on the big themes of work that will help you achieve them. Use the prioritization view to visualize your options and discuss the value of each initiative with the team — updating the scorecard metrics as you go. Below, we sorted the list by value and changed the time frame for the lower priority initiatives that we will not be able to get to this half.
Align on portfolio priorities
If you manage a suite of products, it is important to prioritize your initiatives across the portfolio as a whole. This makes it clear which ones are critical to moving your broader business objectives forward — so the team can make tough tradeoff decisions when it comes to allocating resources. Below, we ranked the combined list of initiatives in priority order and added limit lines to emphasize which ones are must-haves.
Drive customer happiness and business growth by staying focused on the most impactful product initiatives.
Prioritization decisions are rarely easy. But we hope this view makes it easier to coordinate as a team and move forward together. When everyone understands the "why" behind priorities, you pave the way for a more successful and focused roadmap ahead.
